•Addition of Nb and Mo improved the UTS and elongation of L-PBF 420 stainless steel.•Nanoscale NbC precipitated in the presence of Nb and Mo.•Tempering of martensites and NbC correlated with improved mechanical properties.•Mechanical and corrosion properties of L-PBF specimens were superior to wrought 420 stainless steel.
