•Superstition has been described as a by-product of adaptive behaviour.•This hypothesis was tested in healthy individuals using two implicit learning tasks.•Higher superstitious traits correlates with capacity to exploit hidden contingencies.•A link exists between individual differences in implicit learning and superstition.•This link could have implications for the development of maladaptive routines.
