Abstract

•CNC, ChiNC, and CH were used to fabricate a hydrophobic complex membrane.•The CH plays a key role in contributing to the hydrophobicity of the membrane.•Hierarchical porous structure of membrane was characterized with SEM and BET.•The complex membrane can effectively separate water from water-in-oil emulsions.•The complex membrane exhibits a stable performance for a long-time use.
