•An increased level of turbulence around ramps is the result of different manoeuvres.•Turbulence is mainly characterised by an increased number of lane changes.•Most lane changes are performed by merging and diverging drivers.•In their present form, VISSIM and MOTUS fail to reproduce lane change location and frequency around ramps realistically.
