Cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis as causes of diarrhea in kidney and/or pancreas transplant recipients

•Success of kidney and/or pancreas transplantation is sometimes tarnished by opportunistic infections such as cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis, two neglected infections in developed countries.•We conducted the first prospective study in a French referral center for kidney-pancreas transplantation over a one-year period to gain further insights into the prevalence and risk factors for cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis. All patients declaring to have diarrhea underwent, at inclusion, a systematic and standardized etiological exploration and an evaluation of their immunity. A questionnaire about environmental risk factors was also administered. Our prospective study provides new insights and is the first to underline both cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis as significant causes of diarrhea in kidney transplant recipients.
