•High horse movement frequency is a risk factor for Parascaris sp. egg shedding.•Horses originating from large breeding farms are more likely to shed ascarid eggs.•Reduced efficacy of pyrantel against Parascaris sp. was observed.•Proportion of horses shedding strongylid eggs was lowest during the spring time.
