Analysis of the representative shape classification features of Hangul font services.

•A representative shape feature set for Hangul font are proposed.•Shape-based font-classification system has been started based on both “ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34. (2012). Information Technology - Font Information Interchange - Part 1: Architecture, Annex A, Typeface Design Grouping” and “Telecommunication Technology Association, TTAK.KO-10.0906-Part2, Hangul Font Production Guides for Font Registration System Part 2. Design based Classification”.•Compared to PANOSE, which is a representative study on Roman font features, this study included 4 features that are identical to the representative features from PANOSE, such as serif type, weight, and proportion. In addition, 6 features that are unique to the Korean language were selected and differentiated including combination balance (size proportion and distance of phonemes), letter height, closure type, and cursive.•The feature set can be automatically assessed based on the font's curve data and images, and users will be able to perform searches by selecting features that match the font.
