•Methylmercury (MeHg) intoxication is associated with profound neurotoxicity.•Naringenin (NAR), a polyphenol, forestalls MeHg-induced neuronal damage in Swiss albino mice.•MeHg caused oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction leading to neuronal death.•NAR conditioning aided in redox homeostasis, functional mitochondria, neuronal survival.•NAR improved MeHg-mediated loss of cognition showing its neuroprotective potential.
