What is innovation in the area of medicines? The example of insulin and diabetes.

As representatives of a company that has led insulin therapy development for almost 100 years, we feel obliged to respond to the critique raised by Beran et al. [1]. First, we would like to note some points of agreement: we strongly agree that, to maximize benefits for patients, pharmacological progress must go hand in hand with innovation in the delivery of healthcare, including patient education.
