•The hydrophobic natural drug Physcion encapsulated into zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (PHY@ZIF-8).•PHY@ZIF-8 possess high drug loading encapsulation efficiency and pH responsive in nano-carrier drug delivery system.•The PHY-ZIF-8 nanoparticles have high storage stability.•PHY@ZIF-8 exhibited significant antibacterial activity.•PHY-ZIF-8 (MOFs) can serve as a new antimicrobial agent and may be used in the various biomedical applications.
