•The reclassified CATS consists of five subscales.•Most of the subtypes of the reclassified CATS were associated with MDD and BP.•Physical abuse and loneliness/psychological stress are significant predictors of affective temperaments.•These subtypes might be associated with the diagnosis of MDD and BP.
