•A novel thermostable GH5_22 enzyme from Thermogemmatispora sp. has been characterized.•The enzyme low-resolution SAXS molecular envelope has been obtained.•The enzyme is dimeric in solution.•The enzyme releases monomers of xylose as a unique product.•This is a first bacterial GH5 β-d-xylosidase described to date.
