Cancer cell fusion: a potential target to tackle drug-resistant and metastatic cancer cells

•Cell fusion is a well-established phenomenon underlying various physiological processes in the cell cycle.•Role of cell fusion in cancer metastasis and drug resistance.•Plausible mechanisms governing cell fusion with different cell types present within tumor microenvironment is being explored.•Cell fusion as a potential target for overcoming multi-drug resistance as well as inhibition of metastasis and putative modes of treatment have been discussed.
