Utility of routine alcohol screening for monitoring changes in alcohol consumption

•HDL is a laboratory test known to reflect recent average alcohol consumption.•Changes in clinically-documented AUDIT-C scores reflect commensurate change in HDL.•The association was stronger when the two were obtained closer together temporally.•Findings support using AUDIT-C scores for monitoring alcohol use over time.
