Picture-level just noticeable difference for symmetrically and asymmetrically compressed stereoscopic images: Subjective quality assessment study and datasets

•We studied the Picture-level Just Noticeable Difference (PJND) characteristics of symmetrically compressed stereoscopic images and found that there exists perceptual threshold in stereoscopic images.•We investigated the PJND characteristics of asymmetrically compressed stereoscopic images and found that there exists perceptual threshold in the quality difference between the left view and right view.•We explored PJND characteristics of the stereoscopic images coded with JPEG2000 and H.265 intra coding.•We released two PJND-based stereoscopic image datasets, including symmetric dataset and asymmetric dataset. The two datasets contain 10 source images, 3510 and 7020 distorted versions coded by JPEG2000 and H.265 intra coding, respectively.
