Sensitive and highly specific reverse transcription real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) assays have revolutionized the diagnostic toolbox. RT-qPCRs for subtyping and pathotype characterization of animal influenza viruses provide advantages in individual diagnosis and for long term monitoring programs.
