Abstract
We report rates over time for each colectomy type per 1000 person-years.Results: The study population included 32,486 patients with UC.Over a median follow-up time of 31 months, [interquartile range (IQR) 16-52], 1,152 (3.5%) underwent a colectomy. The most common surgery performed among patients with UC in this population was a TAC (n=580, 50% of patients undergoing surgery, Table 1).When stratified by type of colectomy, patients undergoing a TPC were older (median age 53, IQR 44-59) than their counterparts undergoing TAC or TPC-IPAA and those patients with UC not undergoing surgery. There was a significant decrease in the rate of surgery per 1000 person years over the course of the study period, stratified by type of colectomy (all p<0.001, Figure 1).Trends remained significant (all p <0.05) in a sensitivity analysis restricted to 2009-2016.Conclusions: In a commercially insured population from the US, we demonstrated a significant decrease in the rate of colectomy over time. The increased availability and utilization of anti-TNF and other biologic therapies may alter the disease course of UC leading to decreased rates of colectomy.
