•RV function is impaired after heart transplantation (HT) in children and young adults.•There is serial improvement in RV function over the first year after HT.•Infants demonstrate better recovery than noninfants.•By 1 year post-HT, measures that rely on longitudinal contractility remain abnormal.•HT-specific reference values should be used to assess longitudinal RV function.
