•MNX1-AS1 that was associated with ESCC lymph node metastasis, is significantly upregulated in ESCC tissues.•MNX1-AS1 can promote the ESCC cells proliferation, migration, and invasion capacity, and it can regulete ESCC cell cycle and apoptosis progression.•MNX1-AS1 promotes progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma by regulating miR-34a/SIRT1 axis.
