METHODS: Between 1992 and 2018, 180 patients underwent bladder augmentation using ileum and continent urinary diversion using Mitrofanoff procedure in our institution. 122 patients (67.7%), 66 males and 56 females, were questioned about their diversion, concerning their living conditions. We used a self-administered questionnaire of 19 items translated in their spoken language. In addition, we reviewed the cases of patients who had complications after a minimum of 5 years postoperative follow-up. RESULTS: The appendix was used in 161 cases (89.3%). All patients were continent, including 6 after local stoma revision and 7 after bladder neck closure. The self-survey was easy in 103 cases (84.4%). A stenosis of the duct was noted in 49 cases (27%) requiring calibration in 44 cases and surgical revision in 5 cases. Daily activity limitation and tiredness were present respectively in 4% and 17.5%. 82 out of 89 patients (92%) had returned to work and 53 out of 67 patients (79%) successfully took back their usual education. Out of 62 patients who used to be sexually active, 51 reported a satisfactory sexual life after their operation (82.25%). 3 women had got normal pregnancy and then operated by caesarean section with a good outcome. Bladder stones were found in 24 patients (13.4%). CONCLUSIONS: The MCEUD was appreciated by 95% of the patients for the improvement of the hygienic conditions and the positive psychological repercussions, which allow a better familial, social and professional integration compared to other non continent diversion procedures. Better information of the patients on this kind of operation with close follow up to detect early disorders is the guarantee of reduction of complications rate.
