Evaluating the biodiversity quality response of tropical odonata to tree clearance

Abstract
We applied a standardized sampling method to create a series of biodiversity quality indices for Odonata (Dragonflies and Damselflies) in a region of Brazil, which allowed the setting of biodiversity quality baseline values. These indices did not originally require the identification of the Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU)/ species involved beyond abstract identity allocation (1,2,3 etc). By relating these biodiversity quality indices to an environmental variable that measured the degree of riverside tree clearance, we were able to show the differential biodiversity quality response of two suborders of Odonata (Anisoptera and Zygoptera). We used species richness estimate models (Chao 1&2, Bootstrap and Jack-knife) to estimate the number of OTUs present at the time of sampling. Modelling showed that the survey recorded 80% of the OTUs present. We therefore have, measured the biodiversity quality and species richness of a tropical invertebrate taxon and set baseline indices against which trends in the loss or change of biodiversity and completeness of survey can be determined. This process could be utilized in many other taxonomic groups and habitats given the use of standardized sampling methodologies.
