•A long short-term (LSTM) memory network is developed for irrigation flow forecasting.•The LSTM model is coupled with a maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT).•The MODWT and bootstrap based LSTMs outperform MLR, ANN, ELM, and LSSVR models.
