Speed control of inspection pig in gas pipelines using sliding mode control

•Control of pig’s velocity is considered in two-dimensional gas pipeline for the first time.•A robust approach based on sliding mode control is used to keep the pig’s speed constant.•The proposed control scheme considers the parametric uncertainties like fluid density, velocity, pressure and variation of pipeline’s curvature.•Simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed approach.
