A systematic review of aberration detection algorithms used in public health surveillance

•We reviewed 145 studies of aberration detection method used in disease surveillance.•We described the evolution of statistical methods and reviewed evaluation metrics.•We summarized the practical use of the detection methods.•Traditional methods (e.g. SPC, regression) were most explored in evaluation studies.•ML methods and Bayesian framework were increasingly used in multivariate analysis.
