Monitoring spatio-temporal dynamics of habitat quality in Nansihu Lake basin, eastern China, from 1980 to 2015

•We assessed the spatio-temporal dynamics of habitat quality in the Nansihu Lake basin.•The patterns of habitat quality were influenced by the physical geographical factors.•The distribution of habitat quality was also related to socio-economic factors.•The results indicated serious and extensive habitat degradation in the basin.
