Multi- criteria decision analysis FANP based on GIS for siting municipal solid waste incineration power plant in the north of Iran

•This study provides a new MCDM framework for selecting MSWI power plant site based on Combination DEMATEL and Fuzzy ANP methods with GIS.•The criteria are developed for selecting the MSWI site to help decision-makers by achieving to increase the sustainability.•The DEMATEL technique is used for determining the existing relations between criteria and sub-criteria.•The FANP method is employed to determine weights of criteria and sub-criteria with the triangular fuzzy numbers.•The effectiveness of the obtained framework using a case study is evaluated.
