A participatory and practical irrigation scheduling in semiarid areas: the case of Gumselassa irrigation scheme in Northern Ethiopia

•The practical scheduling approach resulted in better yield, water saving and water productivity.•Involving farmers in scheduling studies equipped them with practical facts to judge alternative strategies from their own perspectives.•The practical irrigation scheduling approach seems to be a better option under low farm technology.•Local climate study and observation facilities are recommended.
