Structural characterization of coking component of an Indian coking coal

•Coking component is confined in the lightest density fraction of coal.•Coking component is structurally similar to expandable graphite.•Expandable graphite and molasses can induce coking properties in non-coking coal.•Non-coking coal is converted to coking coal by heat treatment with above additives.
