Energy recovery in the form of N2O by denitrifying bacteria

•It is the first time to recover energy source from NO gas.•Maximum N2O generation reached 70% of the total produced gas.•Inhibition of cytochrome c was the dominant cause for N2O accumulation.•This novel process widens the options for energy recovery from nitrogen-based wastes.
