•N2O global warming impact is 300× higher than CO2.•Nitrous oxide reductase has two copper centers, CuA and “CuZ”.•“CuZ” center can be isolated as CuZ*(4Cu1S) or as CuZ(4Cu2S).•CuZ*(4Cu1S) [4Cu1+] turnover number explains high reduction rate of whole-cells.•Structural and functional model compounds for nitrous oxide reductase active site.
