Green credit policy, property rights and debt financing: Quasi-natural experimental evidence from China

•Uses the introduction of the "Green Credit Guidelines" policy to study green credit policy, property rights and debt financing for the first time.•We find that debt financing among heavily polluting Chinese enterprises dropped significantly following the introduction of the green credit policy.•We believe the green credit policy system plays a guiding role in the allocation of credit resources in China.
