Fluorination renders the wood surface hydrophobic without any loss of physical and mechanical properties

•Fluorination was applied to massive wood.•Covalent grafting of fluorine atoms onto wood surface decreases their hydrophilicity.•The hydrophobic character acquires thanks to fluorination is durable.•Short fluorination does not impact the wood density, morphology, mechanical properties and photodegradation kinetic.
