Effects of prescribed fire and stem-injection herbicide on Ailanthus altissima demographics and survival

•Herbicide followed by fire was effective in killing Ailanthus saplings and trees.•Immediately after fire, Ailanthus germinant numbers increased dramatically.•Four years post-fire, germinants and small seedlings did not persist.•A single prescribed fire does not appear to facilitate the spread of Ailanthus.
