•The new unique and ecological method of glass frosting is presented.•Extensive tests of mechanical, optical and surface properties of frosted glass are documented.•A comparison of glass brushing with current technologies such as sandblasting and acid-etching is shown.•Alternative modifications of the brushed surface are briefly discussed.
