•Two types of low-cost grouted sleeves processed by seamless steel pipe proposed.•Mechanical behaviour of them under uniaxial tension experimentally investigated.•An analytical model for prediction tensile capacity proposed and validated.•Analytical predictions are in good agreement with experimental data.•Tensile capacity increases with increasing spliced bar diameter and wedge length.
