Vortex formation and evolution for flow over a circular cylinder excited by symmetric synthetic jets

•Asymmetric vortex shedding mode over a circular cylinder can be converted into a symmetric mode.•Various wake patterns are found and influence of actuation parameters is analyzed.•Vortex formation and evolution mechanism under symmetric actuations is revealed.•It proves a novel approach to reduce the vortex-induced vibration.
