Non-targeted detection of milk powder adulteration by 1H NMR spectroscopy and conformity index analysis

•A non-targeted method to detect adulteration in milk powders (MPs) was developed.•1H NMR with conformity index analysis was tested with authentic and adulterated MPs.•The method was able to detect most tested adulterants in MPs at EMA levels.•Adulteration by proteins was not detected by this 1H NMR method.
