Modeling irrigation and nitrogen management of wheat in northern Ethiopia

•Application of irrigation and nitrogen are critical for improving wheat yields in Ethiopia.•There were interactions between nitrogen and amount and timing of irrigation.•The relationship between yield and N was curvilinear.•Irrigation Water Productivity (IWP) increased with nitrogen application.•Relative increases in yield and biomass was greater due to nitrogen application.
