An exploration of the paradoxical violation effect

•New drivers’ violations and accident rates are positively correlated.•Paradoxically, violations increase at the same time that the accident rate decreases.•Over time there was an increase in the percentage of drivers reporting that they drive faster than others.•Over time the correlation between violations and accidents decreased.
