Opportunities and challenges in developing orally administered cannabis edibles

•Research into the effects of the food matrix and carrier oils on the bioavailability of THC in edibles is needed.•Standard methods need to be established on assessing bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity.•Legislation around formulation of edibles and beverages needs to be driven by research, which is largely absent at this time.
