•Anisakid control measures implemented by seafood businesses are not efficient.•Visible Anisakis reach the fish market and may be detected and eaten by consumers.•The health risk posed by Anisakis allergens in fish products needs to be assessed.•We need to better understand the impacts of anisakiasis and Anisakis allergy.•Improved food safety legislation and procedures are needed; QRA methods may help.
