•Methane formation potential of primary treatment units is 5.1–7.3 L CH4/(p∙d).•Methane is removed completely for surface loads of up to 19 g CH4/(m2∙d).•Oxidation via nitrate is of minor importance for methane removal.•Methane oxidation causes production of EPS.
