•We explore the proximate link between glucocorticoids (GCs) and melanin-based colour traits.•We measured the gene expression of GC receptors with genes involved in the melanocortin system and melanogenesis.•Expression of GC receptors were associated to melanin-based colour traits.•Expression of GC receptors were associated to PCSK2, a gene involved in the processing of melanocortins.
