•Two of the designed novel solvents deviate from ideal eutectic phase behavior.•Trioctylphosphine oxide-based eutectic mixtures only extract undissociated acids.•Eutectic mixtures show distribution coefficients: acetic < propionic < butyric acid.•Acid distribution coefficients increase with mole fraction trioctylphosphine oxide.
