•Facet engineering is performed on the interface of BiOCl-PbS heterostructures.•BiOCl(0 0 1)-PbS and BiOCl(1 1 0)-PbS are fabricated via selective deposition of PbS.•Electron accumulation in BiOCl(0 0 1)-PbS interface disfavors the charge separation.•BiOCl(1 1 0)-PbS interface achieves the smooth charge transfer and separation.•BiOCl(1 1 0)-PbS exhibits superior broad-spectrum photocatalytic H2 production.
