Flow around a squirmer in a shear-thinning fluid

•Non-Newtonian correction to the flow around a squirmer is calculated asymptotically.•Local and non-local shear-thinning effects lead to qualitatively different impacts.•The non-local effect can be more significant than the local effect for a squirmer.•Exercise caution when predicting dynamics from local viscosity distributions.
