•The reaction efficiency increased with the addition of SO2 on the Cr2O3 catalyst.•The increased SCR efficiency could be attributed to the acid sites and Oa on the catalyst surface.•The SCR reaction on the Cr2O3 catalyst followed a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism.•The Cr2O3 catalyst is a promising marine SCR catalyst with a good sulfur & H2O resistance.
