Abstract
The aim of our study is the analyses of the performance indicators of rehabilitation and chronic inpatient care in Hungary between 1990 and 2016. Data originated from the National Health Insurance Fund Management, the single health care financing agency in Hungary. Descriptive statistics was used as a method in the investigation. Research involved the changes in the most important indexes of rehabilitation and chronic inpatient care in the period 1990-2016. The intrinsic ratios of the chronic beds greatly changed in the period examined, because of the former, dominantly psychiatric, pulmonology, and post-treatment bedcounts (furthermore: chronic care beds) and ratios changed compared to rehabilitation beds. The number of rehabilitation bed increased from 3,419 to 15,120 beds producing 340% increase, at the same time, the number of discharged patients increased by 533%. In addition to the discharged patient counts, the 8.1%point increase in bed utilization indexes and the reduction of care days by 8.6 days show a good example of the increase of efficiency in rehabilitation care. Chronic care bedcounts decreased from 24,367 beds to 9,183 beds which is hardly 37.6% of the bedcounts in 1990. Regarding the intrinsic ratios of the chronic care bedcounts, pulmonology and psychiatric bedcounts decreased, but the post-treatment bedcounts increased. The discharged patient counts decreased from 207, 836 to 81,174 to almost the same extent with the bedcounts. The average nursing daycounts reduced by 3.7 days and the bed utilization indexes showed no significant change. Development of rehabilitation care was one of the most important objectives of recent health policy within chronic care. According to the objectives in health policy, the capacity counts and indicators of rehabilitation care showed a positive change.
