•Zero-deforestation commitments are pledges to end deforestation in a supply chain.•We develop criteria to assess the expected effectiveness of a company’s commitment.•We use these assessment criteria to evaluate existing commitments.•We find several weaknesses across commitments that reduce expected effectiveness.•We recommend changes in commitment targets, deadlines, and implementation.
