Biobanking has recently become an emerging field of academic and commercial interest in China. An increasing number of institutions have established their own biobanks at different levels of administration. In its earliest days, biobanking focused on quantity and scale. Today, the primary focus is becoming its quality and informatization. In the near future, the main question might change to how to use biospecimens and data wisely and efficiently, especially in cross-institutional studies and interdisciplinary projects. To realize the transition from high-quality storage to high-efficiency usage, we designed and developed our own "Utility System of Clinical Data and Biobank Resource of Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University (CMU)." This system is connected to FreezerPro((R)), our current biospecimen management system, as well as to our Hospital information system and Laboratory Information System in real-time. SPREC (Standard PRE Analytical Code), sample processing, current status, anonymous clinical data, and other critical information are integrated into the system. The system was designed under the browser/server framework. By using different modules, it can fulfill different functions such as detailed descriptions, advanced searching, online applications, and biobank inventory checking. Our User Interface design was inspired by leading Business-to-Customer e-commerce sites. The interface is user-friendly and easy to promote. Furthermore, we aim to convey our ideas about the rules of sample sharing, which are involved in the logic design. The functions outlined above are convenient for medical administrators to obtain a full picture of their working projects. It is also convenient for users to search and apply for biospecimens online. Moreover, it could help the decision-making for the Ethics Committee by using the automatic preapproval function. This system has been widely used in the Beijing Friendship Hospital, CMU, providing scientists with a convenient platform and facilitating clinical biospecimen usage, and increasing sharing ability of the biobank.
